GJE PRACTICAL SUGGESTIONS LELATIO NO SUCTION OBR.

Tith a view to improving relations between the British and

the Chinese, I offer the following suggestions

1. That a pamphlet, or booklet of modest dimensions, on

concise, practical lines, prepared (in collaboration with a British

educationalist, a British businessman, a British missionary to Chána,

a Chinese British subject, an ex-British civil servant of Hong Houe,

and an ex-British Consul in China all of whom being persons keenly

aware of the value of friendly relations between Britain and China

and being persons who have worked in Hong Kong or in Chana) by one

who knows the Chinese people and how to deal successfully with themA,

be issued by the Ministry of Information (") for guidance and advice

to British men and women in their everyday relations with the Chinese

in Hong Kong and China. The pamphlet could contain inter alia

An explanation on the value of friendly relations between

Britain and China;

(ii) Facts and information concerning past relations between Britain

and China with which British people in the Orient should be

acquainted British propaganda to the Chinese has been

seriously neglected);

(iii) Information on general characteristics of the Chinese labouring

classes, the domestic servant class, the office worker, the

merchant and businessman of the middle and upper classes, and

the official, with indications on how to deal with them;

Chinese susceptibilities (e.g., 'loss of face', their respect

for firmness and abhorrence for incivility to them) and the

main points of etiquette in the different classes of Chinese
